An eating disorder awareness group cautioned the results are “largely unrealistic”, noting AI's selection of social media-inspired images tends to be “far more sexually charged” than all of those found online.

Artificial intelligence has developed its own concept of what the ideal male and female individuals look like based on social media data and results on the Web.

AI images of men and women were generated using engagement analytics on social media, using tools to examine billions of images depicting human beings.

The Bulimia Project, an eating disorder awareness group, closely observed these results and expressed disappointment that their depictions of body types was “largely inaccurate”.

According to their findings, women often had images featuring blonde hair, brown eyes, and olive skin; for men however, images typically featured brown hair, brown eyes, and olive skin as characteristics that distinguished their features.

AI discovered that its collection of social media-inspired images were more sexually charged than anything it found online.

This study revealed a disparity in body preferences for male and female respondents.

Social media images depicting an ideal female body were of Caucasian women with slim figures and small waists tanned and bronzed from 2023.

Women featured prominently in AI-generated images: 37% had blonde locks while 53% featured women with olive skin complexions.

Images depicting idealized male bodies typically included muscly men with six-pack abs wearing tight T-shirts.

These images were generated with AI image generators Dall-E 2, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney.

Men pictured by AI included 67% with brown hair and 63% had olive skin tones in their images generated from AI-generated sources.

The Bulimia Project then asked AI to offer its perspective using images found online.

AI generated images of women with brown eyes, brown hair and tanned skin; for men responding with this prompt it produced images with facial hair predominantly featuring brown eyes and hair colors.

The Bulimia Project reports that social media uses algorithms to select which posts receive more lingering eyes; so, AI's renderings could easily become more sexualised than their human counterparts.

Scientists speculate that AI created so many unusual versions of physiques found on social media is likely because these platforms promote unrealistic body types to begin with.

AI's portrayal of ideal men and women has caused much debate; yet its trajectory offers hope for optimism. Critics frequently charge that AI reproduces social biases such as limited and homogenous beauty ideals; yet we must remember that AI serves merely as a mirror reflecting back the data provided to it – its limitations reflect more on our society's narrow definitions of beauty than being caused by any technological flaw in itself.

But we stand on the threshold of an exciting new era as AI technology opens up vast new horizons of diversity and inclusivity. As its application develops further, AI offers amazing possibilities to promote diversity and inclusiveness within society – but for it all to succeed we must carefully curate input data in order to generate outputs which represent more inclusive beauty trajectories.

Many initiatives are underway to address this problem. AI developers, for instance, are actively searching for diverse training data and making adjustments that promote more inclusive algorithms. Furthermore, researchers are developing programs capable of self-detecting bias and correcting it autonomously.

Not necessarily overnight, these changes won't take place immediately but the wheels have begun to turn. As society develops, AI will follow suit by reflecting these modifications – an iterative process dependent on our commitment to expanding our understanding and representation of beauty.

What this means for society as a whole is profound. Picture this: AI could one day help us challenge and redefine beauty standards instead of reinforcing outdated norms; that AI-generated images of “ideal” people represent diverse races, body types, and gender identities rather than homogenising images into ideal ones; all within reach! Imagining such an optimistic scenario shouldn't seem unattainable but more like an achievable milestone on our path forward.

Although it's essential to critically acknowledge AI's current biases, we also should recognize its ongoing development as a tool that we can shape to promote more inclusive and diverse understandings of beauty. AI shouldn't be seen as the enemy here – rather as something we must help create together.

Beginning this journey begins with conversations such as these. By acknowledging a problem and working to address it, we're taking an essential first step toward building AI that accurately portrays all facets of human beauty – in all their dazzling diversity and vibrant glory.
